This CD of mine is totally a work of love. It was pored over and worked out in my basement where it was recorded with
a small Tascam® digital recording device I bought for less than $300.00. That is why I say on the cover, "This is
not a professional recording." I call it, "a work of progress, not a work of perfection." That being said,
let me tell you about a truly magnificent musican and composer.
Johann
Sebastian Bach was born March 21, 1685 in Eisenach, Germany. He was born into a family of musicians going back several generations.
As a musician, he was primarily known as a magnificent organist, but he also composed a staggering 1,087 complete works of
music! Among those works are contained 200 church Cantatas. These were works composed for Sunday service at the enormous and
ornate church of St. Thomas in Leipzig, Germany where he was appointed Musical Director for many years. These Cantatas were
like musical sermons, some of which were incredibly complex using a full choir and symphonic instruments with his spectacular
pipe organ being front and center. In my imagination, I can picture this incredible church setting and just how devastatingly
beautifull it must have been to hear and experience!
However, tragically, by 1749 Bach was almost
blind from heredity, overwork and poor light.
Then, ten days before he died on July 28, 1750, his eyesight was
suddenly and unexpectedly restored!! And, in true devotion, even after having suffered a stroke that would take his life,
he continued to try to write his beloved music! As a final note of interest, J.S. Bach often signed his church Cantatas on
the sheet music and was noted for adding in Latin:
"Soli Deo Gloria," meaning in English, "To God Alone be the
Glory!"
I am grateful and humbled beyond words just to have had this
wonderful experience with this great composer's music and to share it with you. The CD contains some tiny slivers from some
of the Arias (songs) that are contained within three of these Cantatas, along with some of the more well known themes for
which he was famous. I say themes because the full works to these themes are much, much longer and more ornamented. So far,
in my spare time, I have recorded 8 small works of Bach which you will find listed in the insert of the CD case. My ultimate
goal, eventually, is to have 18 tracks on my final CD. There are 10 more smaller Bach pieces that have my heart strings and
I will be in my basement as long as it takes to finish these remaining 10. It is one of my great passions in life!
Thank
you for your interest,
Carl
